Here’s why the iPhone Duo’s hinge could be cracking the screen

Within hours of the iPhone Duo going on sale on 23 October 2026, The Verge reported Reddit posts of broken inner screens, all at a similar spot along the hinge. By 25 October The Verge relayed user accounts of the hinge catching and audibly cracking, a YouTuber's dissection claiming a cause, and an iFixit teardown (5/10 repairability) that its headline said 'may explain' the failures. On 26 October ZDNet suggested a bad batch of hinges and Ars Technica said the hinge was 'apparently' damaging screens; Tweakers reported Apple acknowledged the problem and will replace affected phones (BBC also reported replacements). On 27 October the FT described a 'Crackgate' outcry as a setback for CEO John Ternus, and The Verge published an explainer on how the hinge could be cracking the screen. Reporting vs inference: the location of the damage and Apple's replacement offer are reported; the hinge as root cause remains a hypothesis from teardowns and reporters, not confirmed by Apple in the collected sources.

Quelles questions restent ouvertes ?

  • Has Apple confirmed the hinge, or a specific part or batch, as the root cause?
  • How many units are affected, and is it limited to certain production batches?
  • Will Apple change the hinge design or production, or issue a recall beyond case-by-case replacements?
  • Do replacement units fail the same way?
