Rimba

Compliance & LCA Analyst

Open role / 01

Position Summary

We've already built rigorous carbon intensity (CI) monitoring and compliance automation into our software, and we're continuing to develop it. This role sits at that intersection: part carbon analyst, part compliance strategist, and part product collaborator. You'll work directly with renewable fuel producers on CI monitoring, pathway development, and ongoing compliance under California, Oregon, and Washington LCFS, the federal RFS, Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, and the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), and ISCC schemes. You'll own the technical analysis and initial review, build and run lifecycle assessment (LCA) models, and translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable strategies. This isn't a back-office role. You'll be client-facing and technically deep. Instead of producing one-off consulting reports, you'll help encode compliance knowledge directly into software used across the renewable fuels industry, and you'll be an early voice in how the product evolves.

Reporting & Team

You'll report directly to the Director of Energy Compliance Solutions and be part of the team that delivers compliance services to Rimba's clients. You'll work day-to-day with our product and engineering teams to turn what you learn on client engagements into features of the platform.

  • Location: Remote within the U.S.; the team is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Travel: Up to 10% for client site visits, verification audits, and team meetings.

What You'll Do

  • Pathway development & consulting: Prepare fuel pathway applications and supporting evidence for LCFS, Canadian CFR, RFS, and 45Z, and guide them through regulator review, questions, and approval.
  • LCA modeling: Build, modify, and run LCA models (CA-GREET, 45ZCF-GREET, Canada's Fuel LCA Model, OpenLCA) to calculate pathway CIs and evaluate improvement scenarios.
  • CI monitoring & reporting: Help our AI-native services track each client's operational CI against its certified values, prepare periodic compliance reports, and flag deviations before they become compliance or credit-value risks.
  • Data validation & verification readiness: Help our AI-native software review feedstock, energy, and production data, apply mass and energy balance checks, trace material data issues to their root cause, and support clients through third-party verification and any findings.
  • Documentation: Produce technically rigorous, regulator-ready documentation and clear client-facing reports.
  • Client advisory: Interpret results with clients, shape their compliance strategy, and identify emission reduction opportunities and their impact on credit value.
  • Regulatory tracking: Monitor rulemakings, amendments, and agency guidance across programs, and assess what they mean for clients and for the product.
  • Product collaboration: Turn compliance know-how into product requirements, validate calculation outputs in the platform, and help shape how the software surfaces compliance insights.
  • Project delivery: Manage multiple client engagements at once against regulatory deadlines, and keep the Director informed on status, risks, and priorities, without sacrificing analytical quality.

What Success Looks Like

  • First 30 days: You've learned the platform and our client portfolio, and you own CI monitoring and reporting for a set of client facilities.
  • By 3 months: You've led at least one pathway application or consulting engagement end-to-end, from data collection through regulator submission.
  • By 6 months: Clients see you as a trusted advisor, and at least one product feature carries compliance logic you helped define.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, energy systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2–3 years in environmental consulting, renewable fuels, or energy systems analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with LCFS and/or Canadian CFR fuel pathway certification. You've done this, not just read about it.
  • Fluency with LCA methods, including working experience with GREET.
  • Experience performing data validation and accuracy checks, with a working knowledge of statistical analysis and mass and energy balance principles. You can find material data issues and trace them to their root cause so the CI is represented accurately.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for building and auditing calculation models.
  • Strong written and verbal communication. You can explain a CI calculation to a regulator and to a boardroom.
  • Self-directed, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to manage competing priorities and hard deadlines.
  • U.S. work authorization. We're not able to sponsor visas at this time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A relevant professional credential, such as CARB-accredited LCFS verifier or ISO 14065 Lead Verifier, or Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer in Training (EIT), or progress toward PE licensure, with greenhouse gas or environmental attestation experience.
  • Experience with OpenLCA or Canada's Fuel LCA Model, in addition to GREET.
  • Experience with ethanol, RNG, renewable diesel, biodiesel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or other alternative fuel production pathways.
  • Exposure to EU RED compliance or voluntary certification schemes such as ISCC.
  • Excel macro/VBA development; Python or SQL is a plus.
  • Experience at a software or early-stage company, or working alongside product and engineering teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • 10 paid company holidays and 3 weeks of flexible PTO annually.
  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance and benefits.
  • Support for professional development, including verifier and LCA training.
  • The chance to join a fast-growing, AI-native software and services company early and shape its compliance practice.
